Cowell Lime Works Historic District, UC Santa Cruz, offers a glimpse into the workings of a 19th century rural industry. Local limestone was heated in large redwood-fired kilns to produce lime for making mortar and plaster. See the lime kilns, cooperage (barrel factory), worker cabins, cook house, and massive timber-framed barns.
